Think before you light

In Finland, approximately 2,500 wildfires occur each year. Most of them are caused by humans. The most common causes include campfires, barbecues, burning of branches, and smoking. Always think before you light a fire.

Guidelines for safe fire handling

Consider not only the environment, other people, and animals but also yourself, and follow the guidelines for safe fire handling.

Anyone who causes a wildfire may be held responsible for damages amounting to millions of euros – regardless of age.

If you spot a wildfire, follow these steps

  1. Call the emergency number 112
  2. Warn people nearby
  3. If it’s a small fire just starting, try to extinguish it with water or sand – but do not put yourself in danger
  4. Move to a safe location if necessary

Current wildfire warnings in Finland

It is strictly forbidden to light an open fire in an area where a wildfire warning is in effect. This applies to all three danger levels, yellow, orange, and red.
