The person who lights a campfire is also responsible for extinguishing it. Causing a wildfire – even through negligence – can result in substantial liability for damages. Plan in advance how you will extinguish your campfire properly.
- Stop adding wood in time and let it burn down to embers.
- Pour plenty of water over the entire fire pit area (not just the center) several times.
- Stir the fire pit with a stick while adding water to ensure no embers remain smoldering beneath the surface.
- Make sure the edges of the fire pit are also thoroughly soaked.
- Listen, observe and test: a fully extinguished fire pit does not hiss, produce smoke or steam, and does not feel warm.
